Abstract

CORREA RESTREPO, Juan Santiago  and  REYES PEREZ, Andrés Felipe. River and rail connectivity of the Colombian Caribbean in the igth and 20th centuries: the Cartagena railway. memorias [online]. 2022, n.47, pp.162-191.  Epub Aug 03, 2022. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.47.385.

This document examines railway connection for the country's international trade through the port of Cartagena, in terms of its ability to position it as the structuring axis of the economic, political, and social life, not only in the department of Bolívar, but also, in general, in the Caribbean region in the 19 th and 20th centuries. It also investigates the role of the railroad in shaping social movements promoted by skilled workers and its scope and impact on regional and national history. From the methodological point of view, the inquiry relied mainly on newspaper sources. The newspaper library of the National Library of Bogotá provided a rich archive of regional press, especially from Cartagena, for a better understanding of the period 1860-1950.

Keywords : Railways, foreign investment; channels; foreign trade.
