Abstract

TARAZONA, ÁLVARO ACEVEDO  and  PEREZ, DIANA GARCÍA. Chicamocha canyon: a proposal for the cultural heritage ofhumanity in the 21 st century. memorias [online]. 2023, n.49, pp.124-147.  Epub Nov 14, 2023. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.49.306.911.

The article describes the interest of the department of Santander (Colombia) in declaring the Chicamocha canyon as World Heritage and cultural landscape in accordance with the proposal made by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). From the consultation of the primary source, chronicles of the Indies and some institutional documents, the cultural identity of Santander is reconstructed, which is currently exploited from historical-cultural tourism. The documentary sources show the importance of the cultural processes bequeathed by the guanes. The proposal of the Chicamocha canyon as World Heritage will give a greater sense of culture and appropriation by its inhabitants. This research determines the existence of the Chicamocha canyon as a cultural landscape with a unique value in its historical, archaeological and ethnographic aspects, which is in arrears to be declared as a cultural heritage of humanity.
