Abstract

FONTALVO HERRERA, Tomás; MORELOS GOMEZ, José  and  DE LA HOZ GRANADILLO, Efraín. Use of discriminant analysis to evaluate the behavior of financial indicators in companies in the coal industry in Colombia. Entramado [online]. 2012, vol.8, n.2, pp.64-73. ISSN 1900-3803.

The use of discriminant analysis is presented in this study in order to evaluate the behavior of financial indicators in companies in the coal sector in Colombia. In the methodology used, financial indicators were calculated for the 31 companies which submitted their financial reports. Next, the technique of multivariate discriminant analysis was used to explain the pertinence and discrimination of each group of indicators of liquidity and proftability evaluated, having as a result the existing correlation between the companies studied and the increase in the liquidity and proftability rates for 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010. From the discriminant function obtained and from the statistics analyzed, it can be concluded that the Current Ratio (CR) did not present any significant differences. This did not occur for the Acid Proof (AP) indicators, which improved in the three periods analyzed. Net Capital (NC), Operating Margin (OM), and Net Margin (NM) improved in 2006 and 2008, but did not show the same result in 2008 and 2010. The Gross Margin (GM) indicator improved in the three periods, and the Operational Utility (OU) indicator held steady in 2006 and 2008 but improved in 2008 and 2010.
