Abstract

SUAREZ-PINEDA, Jesús Alberto. The legacy of classical rhetoric in the Defense of General Nariño before the first Colombian Senate in 1823. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2019, vol.17, n.27, pp.624-644. ISSN 1900-6586.  https://doi.org/10.21830/19006586.483.

This article shows that the legacy of classical rhetoric in defense of General Nariño before the first Colombian Senate in 1823 had Thomistic origins, that is, it proceeds from the political thought of scholasticism. The documentary evidence is examined through the critical analysis of the discourse to make explicit the implicit: the defense of the honor of Nariño as a Statesman. In consideration of this masterpiece of Colombian parliamentary oratory, this work proposes that the scholastic tradition of the Independence was a determining factor in the construction of the State's identity. It is concluded that this defense laid the rhetorical foundations in the configuration of the historical personality of Colombia, a nation in a trance.

Keywords : Antonio Nariño Álvarez; classical rhetoric; Defense of General Nariño; parliamentary oratory in Colombia; speech.
