Abstract

ORTIZ PIEDRAHITA, VANESSA. PERCEPTIONS AND ESTHETIC BODILY PRACTICES OF A GROUP OF AFRO-DESCENDENT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN CALI. CS [online]. 2013, n.12, pp.85-126. ISSN 2011-0324.  https://doi.org/10.18046/recs.i12.1678.

This article presents the results of a qualitative study of the perceptions held and bodily practices performed by a group of Afro-descendent students with regard to their own bodies and appearances. It discusses how this group of students partially reproduces socio-culturally transmitted hegemonic ideals of beauty, and in doing so recreates a hybrid aesthetic model that values black beauty in connection with globally disseminated aesthetic standards.

Keywords : Bodily practices; Corporal appearance; Race; Ethnicity.
