Abstract

CASTRILLON-VALDERRUTEN, María del Carmen  and  SANCHEZ-SALCEDO, José Fernando. Institutional Change in the Attention of Mental Illness at San Isidro Psychiatric Hospital (1957-1970). CS [online]. 2019, n.28, pp.259-297. ISSN 2011-0324.  https://doi.org/10.18046/recs.i28.2838.

Clinical histories are an important source of information about institutional changes given that they provide data about the general way in which psychiatric institutions function. This article seeks to explore, through a qualitative revision of 24 clinical histories of the Hospital Psiquiátrico San Isidro in Cali (Colombia), the methods to diagnose and the treatments carried out by the psychiatrists affiliated to the Department of Psychiatry of the Universidad del Valle, between 1957 and 1970. One of the main findings of this study is the setting of an "institutional change", i.e., the institutionalization of a medical practice which standardized procedures, diagnoses, and treatments, through an institutional mechanism that legitimized and reproduced these practices at a local level.
