Abstract

PAEZ ROJAS MD, Paola Liliana et al. “Te Acompañamos” Strategy: Teaching Medical Professionalism and Humanism in a Colombian Ambulatory Care Setting. Univ. Med. [online]. 2021, vol.62, n.2, e32694.  Epub May 15, 2021. ISSN 0041-9095.  https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.umed62-2.acom.

Introduction:

The need for a comprehensive education that transcends theory is necessary in the medical student training process. For this reason, “Te Acompañamos” (We accompany you) is an experience-learning strategy that seeks to enhance the development of humanization and medical professionalism through a program based on the accompaniment of elderly patients by medical students in a primary care center setting is described.

Methods:

The program started in 2017 in the city of Bogota – Colombia. Data collected between 2017 and 2019 was analyzed. The student experience was evaluated through a semi-structured survey based on coding of the qualifiers described by students on their experience. The patient experience was evaluated through a structured telephone survey that yielded percentage indicators of satisfaction.

Results:

289 students participated benefiting 824 older adults. We highlight the development of prosocial behaviors, empathy, and knowledge of the patient’s context at the end of the experience. Additionally, satisfaction of the beneficiaries of the program and humanization of the attention received in the center is described.

Conclusion:

Humanization and professionalism is necessary in comprehensive medical training. For this reason, it is necessary to implement experience-learning strategies in clinical practice to achieve better results and medical formation.
