Abstract
SANABRIA, Álvaro; VALDIVIESO, Eduardo and GOMEZ, Gabriel. Should preoperative bowel preparation be continued?. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.1, pp.23-28. ISSN 2011-7582.
Introduction: The preoperative preparation of the bowel is a generalized routine among surgeons; however, recent evidence poses doubts upon its effectiveness. Our group undertook a review of the information pertaining its efficacy. Methods: A systematic search of the articles of best quality was performed (systematic reviews) based upon the quality criteria defined by JAMA. Results were particularly analyzed. Results: Preoperative bowel preparation augmented the rate of anastomotic leaks. It was not possible to discriminate this effect according to the site of the anastomosis. Conclusion: The conduct of routine bowel preparation should be reevaluated.
