Abstract

HERNANDEZ ENCALADA, Christian  and  MORAN OBANDO, Willyan. Efficacy of intratesticular glycerol and zinc gluconate as a contraceptive method in cats. rev. colombiana cienc. anim. Recia [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.1, 04.  Epub Mar 22, 2023. ISSN 2027-4297.  https://doi.org/10.24188/recia.v14.n1.2022.908.

Objective.

To evaluate the efficacy in reproductive control by intratesticular application of glycerol plus zinc gluconate in indoor eats.

Materials and methods.

In the present investigation, 13 indoor eats were classified into two study groups. Group 1: 6 eats were submitted to traditional bilateral orchiectomy. In group 2 the 7 cats were injected in both testes with 1 mL of glycerol-zine gluconate mixture, testicular measurement and clinical parameters were taken on days 0, 8, 16, 46 in group 2.

Results.

Within group 2 testicular size at 46 days had a percentage reduction of 65% less volume and length compared to day 0 after intratesticular application of the chemical and 76% less spicules compared to day 0. Sperm count was taken from the tail of the epididymis was performed on all individuals in group 2 after bilateral orchiectomy at 46 days, resulting in azoospermia in all individuals.

Conclusions.

It can be determined that a bilateral injection of 70% glycerol plus 4.5 mg of zinc gluconate is an alternative to conventional orchiectomy, where it is a less invasive, faster, less traumatic method and with an economic reduction of 85% in relation to a surgical orchiectomy.
