Abstract

The electoral process was in the early nineteenth century in Nueva Granada territory stormed the cultural, political and social life of its inhabitants, and succeeded in introducing new ways of understanding the socio-political dynamics that the new Republic was beginning to experience. This paper aims to analyze the electoral practices were woven in the Province of Popayan between 1832 and 1853, and seeks to show that the primaries played a leading role in the political life of the period payanesa noted, where the actors of the time activated their power relations through partnerships, family socio-political groups and networks in order to win the elections. This, we intertwine the primary sources (epistolary, newspapers and hojas sueltas that rest in the archives and libraries of Colombia) to secondary sources (written on the subject in literature Colombia, Latin America and Europe). Thus, we conclude that the elections became spaces for leadership, negotiation, alliances and formation of political traditions in Popayan.
