Abstract

ALCALA FERRAEZ, Carlos. Demographic Changes in the State of Campeche (Mexico). Conflicts, Development and Economy, 1846-1910. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.20, pp.134-164. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v10n20.67384.

The present article sows the relation between population growth, political turmoil and economic development in the State of Campeche between 1846 and 1910. The study is developed based on the population studies by Robert Mc Caa, John Kicza, as well as Margarita Urias and Carlos San Juan, who relate the demographic trends, figure analysis and economic composition of a given territory. Census, estimations official reports and memoirs are revised. The analysis reveals migration of settlers from the State of Campeche to the coastal area, which was derived mainly from armed conflicts, and failure of federal development plans, which resulted in the relocation of people towards other areas in the country and stagnation in the state’s population growth. The present work is an approach to conduct new studies, which engage the use of number series, and a more detailed analysis of natural and socio-economic processes related with demographic indicators.

Keywords : population; population distribution; migration; economic development (Thesaurus).
