Abstract

CAMANO SEMPRINI, Rebeca Raquel. The Dream of the "Catholic Nation": the Coup D'état of 1943 and the Argentine Church. A View from the Bishopric of Leopoldo Buteler (Rio Cuarto, 1943-1946). Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2019, vol.11, n.21, pp.133-171. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v11n21.73167.

The coup d'état of 1943 was welcomed by the Argentine Church, since it implied the possibility of implementing the "Catholic Nation" project promoted since the previ-ous decade. In the province of Córdoba, he also came to put an end to a political experience characterized by a secularist profile and respectful of public liberties, in-cluding communism. In this article we analyze the relations between the bishopric of Río Cuarto (which covered the southern half of the province and included the second largest city in Cordoba in terms of population, politics and economy) and the military authorities who directed the province's destiny between 1943 and 1946. The purpose is to demonstrate, through a reduction in the scale of analysis, how during these years a symbiosis between Church and Army took place in the construction of a political project structured around Catholic identity. To do this, we used a qualita-tive methodology, based fundamentally on the analysis of both local and provincial newspapers of the time and sources within the ecclesiastical institution.
