Abstract

The mail was the main means of communication in Colombia during the nineteenth century. In this case, what was transported and distributed by the postal system; such as, the private letters, is appealing. These provided valuable data on the historical context in which they were written, and on those who created them. In addition, they contained privilege information, in order to know the social and political relations of that time. For this reason, in this paper, it is presented a document valoration of all the written, also, sent letters by Mamerto García Montoya (1818-1881) during the period of 1843-1847. This merchant was born in Rionegro (Antioquia) and developed business activities, like mining, the bill of exchange transferring, foreign trading, thus the intermediation in the minting gold. Through this assessment, it is seeked to demostrate the usefulness of the correspondence may have as a source for historical research. In this case, for the commerce study in Antioquia during the nineteenth century.
