This study analyzes the existing links between social and public innovation based on the experiences of innovation laboratories in Medellín, where the institutional environment has generated adequate spaces for the open participation of the community and the development of social changes. Such analysis was based on a review of the links between the two types of innovation according to the theory and previous studies. Furthermore, this paper addresses the context of Medellín, where the laboratories under study here are established, in order to understand the particularities of their emergence, purpose, orientation towards innovation, achievements, and contributions to the different actors they collaborate with. The results show the elements that are connected for the emergence and evolution of these spaces, their contribution to solving social problems, the relevance of citizen participation, and the strengthening of the articulation between different citizen actors. Finally, the conclusions highlight the importance of social innovation in the public sphere and innovation laboratories as strategies that promote participation, experimentation, and capacity building in communities to generate more effective solutions to their problems.
