Abstract

ARROYO, CRISTINA YÉPEZ. "AS IF NO ONE OUTSIDE NOTICED": MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES OF A DETENTION CENTER CALLED "HOTEL". perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2021, vol.12, n.24, pp.185-203.  Epub Aug 06, 2021. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202112.24.10.

The "Hotel" Carrión was a migrant detention center that operated in Quito between 2013 and 2017. What are the effects of calling a place of detention a "hotel", confusing hospitality with the administration of the body? This text returns to this place by the hand of people detained who managed to leave and others who experienced the detention of their loved ones. The analysis addresses the euphemization of detention and the view of deportation as an "administrative procedure" that conceals state violence, normalizes the criminalization of human mobility, and minimizes experiences of anguish and suffering.

Keywords : detention centers; deportation; body; memory; human mobility.
