This article is the partial product of a research project aimed at studying the historical development of Social Work in Colombia. On the basis of examples drawn from Europe and the United States, it seeks to understand how the discipline arrives and develops in Colombia. This historical contextualization makes it possible to see that Social Work begins with a professional perspective focused on the professional aspect and gradually constitutes itself as a discipline, as normative, formative, and research referents are consolidated.
