Abstract

JIMENEZ SANCHEZ, Pedro Leobardo; GONZALEZ VERA, María Angélica; ROSAS FERRUSCA, Francisco Javier  and  CALDERON MAYA, Juan Roberto. Socio-environmental impacts of irregular human settlements in in zones and natural protected areas: Chetumal, Quintana Roo, México. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.1, pp.87-99.  Epub Dec 15, 2021. ISSN 2462-9103.

A characteristic of the coastal cities in Mexico is the high potential of natural resources. However, despite the demographic growth and the tourist and economic potential that these cities have originated, these zones have been forbidden for their occupation and decrees for their preservation, decreeing them as protected natural areas. In the case of the Chetumal population center, belonging to the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo state, the growth and expansion of the urban area has occurred over natural and protected areas, therefore, despite the fact that they have been subject to restrictions, these have been occupied by irregular human settlements with urban uses. As the population increases, the areas with potential for urban development become scarce, so the population begins a process of occupation of protected natural areas and the areas with illegal and irregular human settlements increase. The results of the work show that this process of occupation through irregular human settlements has a significant impact on natural resources and ecosystems.

Keywords : human settlement; socio-environmental impact; irregular occupation; natural areas; urban land.
