Abstract

FINQUELIEVICH, Susana. Las cooperativas de telecomunicaciones y la democratización social: Telpin, un estudio de caso de organización comunitaria de la sociedad de la información. rev.estud.soc. [online]. 2005, n.22, pp.37-47. ISSN 0123-885X.

Just as Argentinean ants create the biggest cooperatives in the whole world, cooperative communities among humans distribute electricity, gas, and telecommunications to almost 30% of the Argentinean population. With this in mind-regarding the information society-a question arises: can small communities successfully generate and administrate their own telecommunication system (including phones, Internet and Wi-Fi) while maintaining rates at low-even free-charge for other members of the community? Such is the case of Cooperativa Telefónica de Pinamar, TELPIN Ltda, which was created in 1962 by a group of neighbors who’s objective was to conquer a top ranking place among distributors of telecommunication services, without leaving aside their sense of service to and from the community. TELPIN Ltda is now one of the top telecommunication cooperatives in Argentina.

Keywords : Cooperative; community; information society; Pinamar; TELPIN.
