Abstract

RODRIGUEZ POLO, Kelly Andrea; MORENO ANSELMI, Luis Ángel; GAVIRIA MENDOZA, Carlos Andrés  and  OSPINA GARCIA, Miguel Ángel. Operational evaluation of BRT corridor using microscopic simulation on 68’ avenue corridor at Bogotá city. Tecnura [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.76, pp.31-53.  Epub Dec 05, 2023. ISSN 0123-921X.  https://doi.org/10.14483/22487638.17741.

Context:

In order to solve the problem of public passenger transportation that existed in the city of Bogotá, in 2001 a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system called TrannsMilenio began to operate, which was built on some of the city’s road corridors, such as Caracas Avenue and Autopista Norte, among others. Av. 68 is an essential route that connects the southeast with the northwest of Bogota and is part of the stages where the implementation of BRT corridors is underway.

Methodology:

In this study, one kilometer of this avenue was evaluated, where a critical section of the future BRT projection is located, containing three traffic signalized intersections at present. A sequence of stages is proposed and evaluated in the area studied, starting with the installation of an exclusive BRT lane on the center line of Av. 68 on the existing express lanes in each direction of the vehicular route, next the construction of a roundabout at the intersection with Av. Suba and finally, the addition of mixed vehicle lanes. Evaluations are carried out by using calibrated model in the VISSIM software with the volume, vehicle composition and velocity data collected.

Results:

The results show that the gradual implementation of the proposed modification improves the operational condition of the roadway segment (average speed increases from 17 to 35 km/h) and is sustained throughout the study period.

Conclusions:

The permanent transport solution requires the construction of additional mixed traffic lanes to main- tain the operational status of mixed traffic. and where the average operating speed of the Transmilenio is 38 km/h over the entire study period and 20 years.
