Abstract

MALOOF, Geraldin; RODRIGUEZ, María José  and  MORENO, Freddy. COVID-19 and Pregnancy: Maternal and Neonatal Repercussions. A Literature Review. Univ. Med. [online]. 2021, vol.62, n.4, pp.151-158.  Epub Sep 30, 2021. ISSN 0041-9095.  https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.umed62-4.emba.

The disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 can generate negative consequences during gestation. The objective of this literature review was to report the maternal and neonatal repercussions associated with the SARS-CoV-2 infection. A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline following the search guidelines in the PRISMA Declaration. Fifteen publications were retrieved describing the most frequent repercussion on neonates and pregnant women: Intensive Care Unit admission requiring invasive ventilatory support, preterm birth, postpartum hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, low birth weight, miscarriage and stillbirths. Pregnancy represents an aggregated risk due to the physiologic changes that take place during this period when there is a state of immunosuppression and hypercoagulability, among others. Because of this, pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection have a higher risk of complications. Vertical transmission is an unusual event and infections in neonates are mainly due to horizontal transmission.

Keywords : COVID-19; SARS-CoV-2; pregnancy; gestation; neonate.
