Abstract

ARANGO GAVIRIA, Luz Gabriela; BELLO RAMIREZ, Jeisson Alanis  and  RAMIREZ RAMIREZ, Sylvia Alejandra. Gender, beauty and appearance: the customers in beauty salons in Bogota. Nómadas [online]. 2013, n.38, pp.185-200. ISSN 0121-7550.

Based on nineteen semi-structured interviews the article analyses the use and meaning the customers give to the care of their appearance and to the services provided by beauty salons and hairdressers. It examines how some choices, which help produce, reproduce and destabilize the gender, are influenced by habitus and social status, and modulated by the convergence of social background, race and sexuality in the context of expansion and low professionalization of said services. It concludes that these categories are linked to the search of honor and prestige or lead to stigmatization.

Keywords : Beauty; gender; hairdressers; body; appearance; domination.
