CARRANZA, NICOLÁS FERNANDO. PHOTOGRAPHY, MEMORY, AND EMOTIONS: PAIN AND EMPATHY IN THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION "THE WITNESS" NICOLAS CARRANZA. Maguare [online]. 2022, vol.36, n.2, pp.127-159. Epub 23-Dic-2022. ISSN 0120-3045. https://doi.org/10.15446/mag.v36n2.102863.
In this article I study the interweaving of agents and agencies that takes place in "El Testigo" (The Witness), a photographic exhibition by Jesus Abad Colorado in the Claustro de San Agustin in Bogotá. Based on an ethnographic methodology combined with informal conversations with the public and fieldnotes, I explore and expose the key role of emotional experiences in the configuration of a memory space that prompts processes of sociocultural reshaping in favor of the fight for memory. By sharing painful experiences through narrative, this exhibition configures an emotional community that makes its public turn the unimaginable imaginable; it opens the possibility as well of thinking collectively in a possible and shared peace. This text finally draws attention to the way in which remembering necessarily entails feeling.
