Resumen

CARMONA FONSECA, Jaime; USCATEGUI PENUELA, Rosa Magdalena  y  CORREA BOTERO, Adriana María. Living conditions in Antioquia's (Colombia) paludic areas, 2005. Invest. educ. enferm [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.2, pp.240-249. ISSN 0120-5307.

Objective. To explore the paludic children families living conditions in two different areas of Antioquia. Methodology. Transversal cut, descriptive design. A group of socioeconomic variables that express the families' living conditions between the years 2004 and 2005 are described and analyzed. Results. From 88 families that lived in the cities of Turbo and el Bagre, 58% lived in area. In general the analyzed variables present a statistically significant difference per city and area (worst conditions: Rural-Turbo; worse: Urban-Bagre). The most frequent family characteristics were: Typical nuclear families (66%), with an average of 7.1 members per family. 29% live in a ranch/hovel, 42% have indoor toilets, 31% litter in the open fields. 69% of the houses have vegetation around them, another 66% have stagnant/running water. 64% of the fathers had a job, 59% of the jobs were unsteady. The most common occupations were: farmer (53%), miner (13%) and field worker (12%). The average monthly income was only about $244000. 58% of the families had steady food sources. The meat/ viscera consumption were less than once a week, milk and eggs 2-3 times a week, fruit rich in provitamin A carotenes were not consumed. The consumed food had a high probability to highly satisfy the family vitamin A requirements (45%). Conclusion. Turbo and El Bagre families' living conditions are very deficient and there are a high number of families with unsatisfied basic necessities. There are important differences between the studied cities and between the rural and urban area. The poor living conditions situation in these malaria regions widely overcome what has been referred by Antioquia's department and Colombia's rates.
