Resumen

SUAREZ LEAL, DORA PATRICIA  y  MUNOZ DE RODRIGUEZ, LUCY. Maternal condition and exercise during pregnancy benefit the unborn well being and labor. av.enferm. [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.2, pp.51-58. ISSN 0121-4500.

The study's objective was to discover the importance of physical exercise in the prenatal stage based on beliefs and practices that pregnant women have, who take part of prenatal control of the ESE Hospital San Rafael de Girardot. It was a qualitative design, of ethnographic type, based on ethno-nursing of Leininger's theory of transcultural nursing. Ethnographic interview and Spradley's ethnographic analysis were used; an average of three interviews were taken with each one of the 8 informants, until reaching saturation of information. The sample was represented by the quality of the information supplied. From the depth analysis, three domains and taxonomies were built: 1. Maternal condition, 2. Condition of the unborn, 3. Labor. The study reveled that physical exercise is a way pregnant women prepare for labor; these women have several practices and beliefs on prenatal physical exercise, influenced by their cultural context and give exercise their own meaning. For these pregnant women, physical exercise is any activity done on a daily basis, including working at home and walking. It is through the exercise they prepare themselves for labor. It was evidenced that they have different ways of interpreting and practicing physical exercise during pregnancy and that it is necessary that the health practitioner does not ignore this to be able to provide a care consistent with the culture of pregnant women
