This descriptive and methodological study with quantitative approach intended to determine the validity of construct and reliability of the instrument “Factors that affect the adhesion of the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment in patients with cardiovascular risk factors”. Information was gathered through an instrument designed by Bonilla e De Reales in 2006. This instrument was formed by 53 items and four domains, considering face value, content and reliability. The instrument was applied to 485 patients that met the inclusion criteria. Construct validity was applied to the instrument through an exploratory factorial analysis to determine the correlation among the variables and the four dimensions, using the method of main component extraction and varimax rotation with Kaiser. The internal consistency of the instrument was achieved with the results drawn from the factorial analysis (24 items and 4 domains), through the Cronbach Alpha coefficient. The aforesaid construct validity allowed for reducing the number of items from 53 to 24 through factorial analysis, without changing the 4 domains of the instrument; the internal consistency index obtained through the Cronbach Alpha was 0,60, which is deemed appropriate. Then, a new version of the instrument was created, grouping 24 items in four factors that account for 45% of the variance. This demonstrated that the variables were correlated with the measuring targets, which allows for theoretically grounding the construct, increasing its applicability for nursing professionals in different domains of health care. This shows that the instrument is valid and reliable, and applicable in future studies on adhesion in view to gain a deeper insight into adhesion and its determining factors so as to use them in developing improvement plans in health care practices in favor of patients and their families, thus, encouraging effective adhesion.
