TAVARES, Fabio Lucio et al. Suicide mortality in Espírito Santo, Brazil: analysis for the period 2012 to 2016. av.enferm. [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.1, pp.66-76. Epub 16-Mar-2020. ISSN 0121-4500. https://doi.org/10.15446/av.enferm.v38n1.79960.
Objective:
To describe the mortality of deceases due to intentional self-harm in Espírito Santo, Brazil.
Materials and methods:
Epidemiological study based on secondary data on the trend of suicides occurred in Espírito Santo for the period 20122016.
Results:
Trend analysis indicated an increased rate of suicide mortality over the period 2012-2016 (R 2 = 0.9307; p < 0.001). Most of the victims were men (73.5 %), brown-skinned (47.9 %), adults (81.4 %) who died by hanging, followed by poisoning and firearm. Hanging was more prevalent among males (Ρ = 63; p < 0.001), while poisoning (Ρ = 20.8 %; p < 0.001) and high site precipitation (Ρ = 14 %; p < 0,001) prevailed among women.
Conclusion:
The increase in suicide mortality among the studied population has been following the growing trend in Brazil and the world. It is believed that the present study is an extra resource to access information on suicide to facilitate decision making by the competent bodies when facing this problem, as well as to stimulate and broaden the discussion on the subject.
