CERVERA-OCANA, Rut Irene y BURGOS-CHAVEZ, Othoniel Abelardo. Factors associated with length of hospital stay after laparoscopic appendectomy. rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2023, vol.38, n.1, pp.121-127. Epub 29-Dic-2022. ISSN 2011-7582. https://doi.org/10.30944/20117582.2211.
Introduction.
The objective of this study was to determine factors associated with length of hospital stay after laparoscopic appendectomy.
Methods.
An observational, analytical, retrospective study was carried out at the “Virgen de la Puerta” High Complexity Hospital in Trujillo, Peru, during the period 2017-2019. The sample of 78 patients was divided into prolonged hospitalization (>3 days) and short hospitalization (≤3 days). For the bivariate analysis, the Student’s t-test and chi-square were used. Multiple logistic regression was used for multivariate analysis.
Results.
There is no association between leukocyte count and length of hospitalization. Multivariate analysis determined a significant association between hospital stay and the following variables: age (OR 1.051; p=0.027), surgical time (OR 1.028; p=0.013), surgical diagnosis of complicated appendicitis (OR 15.008; p=0.018), and female sex (OR 6.079; p=0.010).
Conclusion.
Factors associated with the duration of hospitalization after laparoscopic appendectomy in these patients were age, surgical time, surgical diagnosis of complicated appendicitis and female sex.
