Since the late 19th centuary, Bahia Blanca underwent and accelerated economic, social and culture modernization process. This process resulted in an unprecedented multiplication of media outlets and a remarkable expansión of literacy. The press participated both as an outcome and as an active player in the configuration of the modern city. Ilustrated maganizes appeared as urban products at the crossroads of a written and visual culture in full development. By means of different mechanisms, these reading material gained their own audience and acccounted for the increase in the number of readers and the growing legitimacy granted by the reading practice as a social distinction token for the rising bourgeoisie class. According to this scenario, the reading problem will be approached here form a threefold dimensión that includes the empirical reconstruction of this audience through direct and indirect indicators, the recovery ot he model reader proposed by magazines and the analysis of the visual and discursive representations of the reader and of the reading activity itself that appeared in said magazines.
