OSORIO VELASQUEZ, Jorge Enrique y MONTOYA FERRER, Jaime. Coffee, Urban Growth and Architectural Transformation. Pereira, 1910-1930. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.1, pp.69-85. Epub 15-Dic-2021. ISSN 2462-9103.
This article aims to give an answer the question: what was the influence of the coffee economy on the urban expansion and architectural transformation of Pereira between the years 1910 and 1930? This period is clearly identified as one of the most important in the phenomenon of urban expansion experienced by the city during the first half of the 20th century; Pereira goes from being a small town with limited economic activities in livestock and bread-taking agriculture, to being a dynamic population dedicated to the coffee economy, which had increased the effects in other regions of the economy such as commerce and industry, and in very outstanding in public services, which had to experience significant transformations to respond to the nascent demands different from those of housing.
The progress of the coffee activity allows us to appreciate the concepts of urban expansion and architectural transformation, to the extent that the town is constituted in a collection center, vital for the purchase and distribution of grain at the regional level, as well as for the process of threshing necessary for its sale to the large international coffee marketing firms, dynamics that are reflected in the high demand for housing and public services, education and health on the part of a growing population that doubled between 1910 and 1925.
