PANTOJA FIERRO, Jaime Andrés y PANTOJA AGREDA, Jaime Iván. The beginning of Nephrology in Colombia as seen by pioneer nephrologist Jaime Borrero Ramírez. Iatreia [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.3, pp.366-370. ISSN 0121-0793.
Nephrology is in charge of the study, prevention and treatment of the different diseases that have the kidney as target organ, or that involve it as part of other diseases. This specialty was formally born after World War II, with the appearance of the artificial kidney, which started to play an important role in the treatment of serious, even lethal, renal diseases. In Colombia, this specialty started around the 1960 decade, thanks to the efforts of some physicians: Jaime Borrero, Álvaro Toro and José María Mora. They specialized in the United States and devoted their practice in Colombia to the treatment of renal diseases and to the consolidation of Nephrology in the country.
