The construction and negotiation of identities of colonial subjects, particularly caste people, was held in a network of power relations where attributes such as honor, ''quality'', the origin, ''purity of blood'' and color were crucial to establish a social structure based on inequality. That is why the people of caste, as a way of resistance, appropriated this discourse of inequality looking promote strategies to enable them to transform both their identity and their life chances through social mobility. This article aims to explain how the promises of marriage and conflicts related to these were one of those many strategies used by the population of caste for effective social promotion.
