CEPEDA, Paulina. Social logical action of popular housing in Quito. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2022, vol.32, n.3, pp.151-165. Epub 02-Dic-2022. ISSN 0124-7913. https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v32n3.101419.
In Latin American cities, since the 1970s, because of import substitution industrialization processes, there has been a rapid urban expansion accompanied by an increase in the housing deficit. In the case of the Metropolitan District of Quito, the local government tried to control and plan this expansion by purchasing large tracts of land to be managed as social housing (subsidy and credit). On the other hand, certain pro-housing movements began a struggle for access to decent housing (formal and informal). In this sense, access to low-income housing can be explained based on three social real estate logics: necessity, the market and the State. In this way, the research analyzes how the logics of access to low-income housing influence the housing situation of the inhabitants of self-managed housing, compared to those of social housing. Thus, we seek to identify appropriate forms of housing management based on non-monopolistic logics, where the process and the integral action of actors (self-production) determine its configuration, but also its collective participation and integral and progressive production.
