ZAMBRANO JAUREGUI, Camilo. PRESENT-DAY MULTILATERALISM: CRISIS AND CHALLENGES. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2013, vol.8, n.1, pp.45-60. ISSN 1909-3063.
Multilateralism has been loaded with some contradictions of origin; it is described as a nongeographic concept, though its implementation has been shaped by issues of geopolitics and geostrategy. The international system also faces significant changes that have structural consequences. Some of these changes include the reconfiguration of the military and their vital missions, the restructuring of the global economy and the respective weight that different nations have and the growing evidence of a limited role of the UN and its organizations. In this regard, the question is then whether the new configuration of the system and the resulting challenges also require deep changes to multilateralism, as we know it today, concluding that emerging powers must assume a leadership role and disburse the costs implicit with the new role they are taking.
