Resumen

PERALTA AGUDELO, JAIME ANDRÉS. From "Ignorant Deliriums" to "Educated Reflections": The European Enlightenment and the Appropriation of Colonial Periphery Knowledge. Front. hist. [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.1, pp.72-95. ISSN 2027-4688.

This article discusses some aspects of the scientific production of the lower strata of colonial society and the processes of denial, re-presentation and appropriation of much of its contents by those who were formed in the illustrated movement in Europe or in Nueva Granada during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The search of this unexpected journey of knowledge which from the margins flowed their way into the imperial centrality, values the development of concepts, methods and specialized creations located outside the canons endorsed by Western culture. It also explores the social contexts and intellectual authorities that made them possible. The paper also highlights how scientific discourse was used as a strategy of domination over the human and geographic universe located beyond the European continent.

Palabras clave : Circulation of social knowledge; colonialism; cultural appropriation; Enlightenment; local knowledge; scientific discourse.
