One of the characteristic of the Caribbean area, situated in the New Granada during colonial period, especially in the Province of Cartagena, was the presence of palenques or fortified villages, inhabited by fugitive slaves, during the last decades of the 16th century and the 17th century. As well as holding on to their independent lives, they also had their own ways of social organizations, economic activities and political functioning. Although it is difficult to identify the types of leadership that existed, it was possible to examine different forms of political leadership in three of the main Palenques, located in the sierras de María. The investigation been realize using primary sources found in the Santa Fe files from the Archivo General de Indias in Seville.
