ALVAREZ TOBOS, MARTÍN ERNESTO. "The Idols Keep Walking" Re Reading of Two Extirpation Processes of Idolatries in the Southwest of the Province of Tunja (1595). Front. hist. [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.1, pp.274-295. Epub 01-Ene-2022. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.1841.
In August and October 1595, the oidor Egas de Guzman visited the encomiendas of Lenguazaque and Iguaque. In the development of these procedure, he realized that the muisca people continued to practice their ancestral rites, classified as idolatries. From that designation his persecution was unleashed; at the same time, the changes that the cacique's authority had been experiencing were exhibited. The objective of this paper is to analyze four aspects that were manifested in these processes: the identification about these cults like crimes and sins, the political tensions around caciques and capitanes in their communities, the development of a "religious cohabitation" between Catholicism and ancestral ceremonies, and the types of punishment imposed on the accused people.
