Resumen

CORTES-CUADRA, Juan Vicente. Gaudium and fruition. The medieval issue of enjoyment in b. spinoza’s ethics. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2017, vol.66, n.164, pp.129-149. ISSN 0120-0062.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ideasyvalores.v66n164.49620.

Spinoza’s assimilation of the soul, that is, the idea of the body, to gaudium (e3p57) is problematic: if it is the affect defined in e1 p18s, said assimilation contradicts what is stated in e2ax3, namely, that the idea precedes the affect. If it is a passive affect, then the soul would be assimilated to a passive affect, which contradicts the idea that the mind can be affected by active affects. The article suggests a solution in two stages: it shows the double use of gaudium as an affect and as an intermediate point between the structure and the concepts, and then goes on to determine the unity of the notion of enjoyment through its use. Finally, the article compares this concept with the ideas of Thomas Aquinas, in order to demonstrate its importance in the discussion on freedom.

Palabras clave : B. Spinoza; Thomas Aquinas; enjoyment; freedom.
