Resumen

VALENCIA RINCON, JUAN CARLOS. Mediations, Communication and Coloniality: Encounters and Disagreements of Cultural Studies and Communication in Latin América. Signo pensam. [online]. 2012, vol.31, n.60, pp.156-165. ISSN 0120-4823.

The fields of Communication and Cultural Studies in Latin America share similar paths that managed to converge for a long time. However, with the emergence first of the Latin American Subaltern Studies Group and later of the Modernity/Coloniality Group, the Cultural Studies field has adopted radical, critical positions that ignore the findings of the Latin American School of Communication and of Reception Studies. On the other hand, the Latin American School of Communication with its emphasis on hibridity and the appropriations made by the audiences has sidestepped the role that coloniality plays in our context. The contemporary Communication academia in the region seems to be moving away from a concern with social mediations to fall in the trap of disciplinary isolation. This article analyzes the current relationship between these two fields of knowledge, looking for common perspectives but also acknowledging their differences.

Palabras clave : communication; cultural studies; coloniality; subalternity; mediations; Social participaction -- LatinAmerica; Social integration-- LatinAmerica.
