RODRIGUEZ-DE MONTES, María Luisa. MUZOCOLIMA ONOMASTICS OF CUNDINAMARCA AND BOYACA REGION. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2016, n.69, pp.193-215. ISSN 0120-5587. https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n69a08.
There are two Relaciones from the Conquest period on extinct indigenous Muzocolima (Caribbean) people. The vocabulary of these documents was studied by Morales Padrón (1958) and Del Castillo Mathieu (1972). The Muzocolima language disappeared early, and there is no more than the data on the Relaciones about it: no other written source is available. In this article, the lexical data (108 words) of the former sources are compared with 1) onomastic data from the works of Velandia (1979-1982) on Cundinamarca (3 642 place names and 3 248 personal names); 2) with data from the Agustín Codazzi Institute's Diccionario geográfico de Colombia; 3) with data from Pérez Arbeláez (1996) Plantas útiles de Colombia; and 4) with the telephonic directory of Bogotá. We want to know to which extent the lexical data from the Relaciones have survived in the toponymy, in the anthroponomastics, and in other areas. More data of this type might be obtained by searching in the current Muzocolima region, and in local and parish archives.
