PIMIENTA JIMENEZ, Hernán J; MEDINA MARIN, Adriana M y BETANCOURTH, Martha I. Sistema glutamatérgico II: alteraciones en isquemia, alzheimer y esquizofrenia. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2003, vol.32, n.1, pp.51-76. ISSN 0034-7450.
Pyramidal neurons of the cerebral cortex used glutamic acid as their transmitter. Different types of afferents converge over pyramidal cells. At the same time, this cells give rise to efferent fibers that Inter.-connect widely different sectors of the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. The triad of reciprocal interactions between glutamatergic, gabergic and monoaminergic neurons in limbic regions, in the neocortex and in regulatory centers of cortical function such as basal ganglia, substantia nigra and thalamus are considered fundamental for the motor, cognitive and emotional activities. In the present article we offer an update review of the glutamatergic system and its possible role in ischemia, schizophrenia and Alzheimer disease.
