SERPA FONNEGRA, María de la Paz  y  RAMIREZ BOJACA, Édgar Eduardo. Sexuality and Menopause: A Study in Bogotá (Colombia). rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2009, vol.38, n.1, pp.85-98. ISSN 0034-7450.

Introduction: Today’s mature woman incarnates a new expression of feminine sexuality. More and more studies show the relationship of the climacteric state with sexual desire or pain disorders, but few have dealt with the healthy woman’s perception of her own sexuality. Method: Observational descriptive study case series type. Survey of 88 closed questions, applied in Bogotá during the months of August, September and October of 2007 to 423 women of all social-economical levels, healthy or ill, born between 1945 and 1962. Results: Menopause does not affect the sexual desire of 33%. The way they feel pleasure is not altered in 60%. More than 57% describe positively their sexual expressions and 40% of the requested women enjoy their sexual relations very much. 31% report a severe decline in lubrication and 28% report a slight one. Masturbation is not considered as an alternative for 65%. As far as intensity of orgasms, 50.6% described them as less intense and 49.4% as more intense. Conclusion: Sexual desire remains effective in most women in this stage of life. We did not find a conclusive relationship between sexual dysfunction and menopause.

Palabras clave : Menopause; sexuality; dyspareunia; orgasm.
