RODRIGUEZ, Jorge Martín; ORTIZ, Yamileth  y  RODRIGUEZ, René Fernando. Dengue in Palmira-Vallle(Colombia)2001-2004. An epidemiological. rev.fac.med. [online]. 2006, vol.54, n.2, pp.88-95. ISSN 0120-0011.

Background. Dengue is a viral disease of tropical and subtropical zones transmitted by bites. Dengue produces many manifestations, and it is classified in: classic, hemorrhagic and shock dengue syndrome with differences in its severity. Objective. To describe and to generate possible explanations about the behavior of dengue in its classic and hemorrhagic varieties observed in Palmira- Valle del Cauca (Colombia) between 2001 and 2004. Materials and methods. Descriptive study, which used the registries of monitoring system in Public Health of Palmira, originating on daily harvesting of health services and weekly consolidation at local health direction. Results. A reduction of the 88,2% of the registries of classic dengue was observed from 2001 to 2004, being greater in the group of 15-44 years by a reduction of 92,2%, in the group of 5-14 years diminution was of 89,8% and in the people of 45- 59 years it was of the 88,2%. Notification of probable cases of classic and hemorrhagic dengue has an important deficit because medical personnel of health institutions don’t use standardized criteria for these diseases diagnostic. Conclusion. It is necessary to implement periodic qualifications to the health professionals in classic and hemorrhagic dengue, and to continue with the processes of entomologic monitoring and social participation for control and prevention of this disease.
