Background. Arterial hypertension (HTA) is defined as a systolic blood pressure greater or equal to 140 mmHg or a diastolic pressure (EVEN) greater or equal to 90 mmHg, being this one a main motive of medical consultation. Objective. In order to obtain a better understanding of hypertension risk factors, in the of ASSBASALUD E.S.E Manizales Colombia staff, an epidemiological search was carried out. Materials and methods. Cross-sectional study was made by application of an instrument, involving 241 health workers in the area. Men and women, with ages between 20 and 69 years were involved. Variables as: demographic information, familiar and personal antecedents of hypertension, smoking status, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, blood pressure, were recorded. Results. Hypertension risks factors were: married (29.6%) and unmarried (29.6%) people, alcoholic consumation (40.7%). Family history of hypertension, cigarette exposition (25.9%), and antihypertensive medication, olso were indentified. Women had the highest proportion of risk factors; arterial hypertension and dyslipidemia were the stronger risk factors among them (81.5%). Conclusions. Analyzed data in the present study shows to the importance of identifying the hypertension risk factors in a determinate population.
