This article shows Guane indians petroglyphs and pictographs semiotic-historic and geological analysis. According to archaeology-anthropological, geological and documentary evidence, this group lived in Santander department in the Colombian Northeast in pre-hispanic and during the Indiano period or colonial time. This paper answered the question about of conditions and characteristics of canvas rock used by Guanes in their pre-hispanic writing. The article presents the analysis of engraved petroglyphs and pictographs drawn in rocks used as canvas or canvas-rocks, where narratives were decorated with red color dyes, that came from rock scales with hematite's mineralization, which are accessible at veredas (rural areas) Diamante, El Pozo and Las Gachas, in Los Santos town jurisdiction at The Mesa de Los Santos, is a structural landform-denudational with plateau characteristics. The geological analysis indicated pictograms were painted on calcareous rocks while petroglyphs were engraved at sandy type rocks. From the historical-semiotic point of view, Guane pictograms and petroglyphs are writing prints from a society that deserve to be deep studied, in order to preserve cultural and geological heritage, because in conjunction, this is an eco-systemic service which is not enough evaluated in the regional context.
