Resumen
MIGUEL, Sandra. Journals and scientific production in Latin America and the Caribbean: its visibility in SciELO, RedALyC and SCOPUS. Rev. Interam. Bibliot [online]. 2011, vol.34, n.2, pp.187-198. ISSN 0120-0976.
This study compared the coverage of journals, by country and topic, from Latin America and the Caribbean included in SciELO, RedALyC and SCOPUS. It measured the percentage of journals found in these sources in relation to those registered in the LATINDEX catalogue. It estimated the volume of scientific productivity recorded in the three sources mentioned and its evolution during the years 2005 through 2009.The results showed that the three sources where complementary. On average the percentage of title overlap was low and the distribution of journals by country uneven. In the sources studied, no country was found to have all of the journals included in LATINDEX. SCOPUS and SciELO were more thematically balanced than RedALyC which showed a marked bias toward social science articles. The volume of scientific production found in SCOPUS was far better than that of SciELO and RedALyC, although it showed uneven distribution by country. During the time period examined in this study, all three sources showed a tendency toward productivity growth.
