Within the framework of the current debate on the distribution of the glottal stop, its phonological status and surface realization, as well as the glottalization phenomena in Amerindian languages, this paper focuses on the Mataguayan language family spoken in the Gran Chaco, South America. From a phylogenetic perspective, the hypothesis of an ejective series in the Proto-Mataguayan is supported. Also, a number of arguments are postulated for the reconstruction of /*ʔ/ as a proto-phoneme, among which is the development of glottalized sonorants (consonants and vowels). It is speculated that the emergence of glottalized consonants and vowels occurred internally to languages and, presumably, at different stages in each case. In line with some theoretical proposals, and based on the glottal stop behavior and glottalization phenomena in this language family, we propose that the analysis of the glottal stop as a segment is adequate for the Mataguayan languages.
