Resumen
JIMENEZ MORENO, Eliana Marcela. Evaluation of the impact of the “Reading Time” strategy in an educational institution. Leng. [online]. 2022, vol.50, n.2, suppl.1, pp.435-457. Epub 03-Oct-2022. ISSN 0120-3479. https://doi.org/10.25100/lenguaje.v50i2s.11888.
This study evaluated the impact of the reading-hour strategy implemented in Caldas, during 2017 and 2018. The objectives were two-fold. On the one hand, the study aimed at recognizing the impact of the strategy from the perspective of students, teachers and parents, and, on the other hand, at learning teachers and students’ assigned value to reading. A mixed-methods research design was implemented. Data collections instruments included surveys containing both open and closed-ended questions. The sample consisted of 233 participants, including 160 elementary and junior high school students, 27 teachers and 46 parents. Results show that participants regard reading as a beneficial activity for personal, professional and cultural growth; it allows freedom of thoughts, the recreation of feelings and the deployment of capabilities. However, the participants expressed that essential aspects such as textual typology, competence levels in reading and writing had been neglected. As a conclusion, pedagogical strategies such as the reading hour should take into account the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of the students according to the demands of the real world.
