BONET MORON, JAIME y MEISEL ROCA, ADOLFO. THE POLARIZATION OF DEPARTMENTAL PER CAPITA INCOME IN COLOMBIA, 1975-2000. Ens. polit. econ. [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.54, pp.12-43. ISSN 0120-4483.
This essay advances the study of the convergence in regional income in Colombia, through an analysis of the fi gures for departmental income recently estimated by the CEGA. The results show a process of polarization between Bogotá and the rest of the departments. The clear supremacy of Bogotá during the years under study is also shown, in that the capital registered a per capita income that is more than twice the national mean and more than eight times that seen in the department with the lowest income, Chocó. This situation persisted throughout the period: Bogotá consolidated its position as the leader in per capita regional incomes, while the departments at the periphery of the country remained in the last places. These fi ndings oblige us to think about the need to establish a State policy aimed at correcting the enormous disparities observed in departmental per capita income.
