Resumen

TORRES AGREDO, Janneth; MEJIA DE GUTIERREZ, Ruby  y  GUTIERREZ, Constanza. The performance of mortar containing added metakaolin regarding sulfate action. Ing. Investig. [online]. 2008, vol.28, n.1, pp.117-122. ISSN 0120-5609.

This paper presents the performance evaluation of added mortars with Colombian Metakaolin (MK) when these are submitted to the sulphate action. Four proportions of MK as replacement of cement were used in this study: 10, 20, 35 and 50% by weight of cement. Cement with 11% of tricalcium aluminate was used. After the specified initial moist curing period, mortar specimens were immersed in 5% sodium sulfate solution for a total period of 280 days. The degree of sulfate attack was evaluated by measuring expansion of mortar cylindrical, compressive strength reduction of mortar cubes, and visual inspection of mortar specimens. An additional study, using X-Ray Diffraction technique, was conducted to determine the products formed in the cement pastes due to the sulphate attack. The results showed that the sulfate resistance of MK mortar increased with increasing the MK replacement level. It is recommended a MK proportion superior to 20% to obtain a better performance against sulphate attack.

Palabras clave : Kaolin; metakaolin; sulphates; durability; pozzolan.
