Although historians in the United States have not in recent years paid much attention to the independence of South America, those specializing in Latin America history have inevitably written on the life and works of Simón Bolívar. However, their original research contributions to Bolivarian historiography have been few. The biographies of Bolívar by United States authors have been mainly popularizations or even works for juvenile readers. Other writings on the period, including studies of his rivals and collaborators, have only in small measure made up for the lack.
